Patients with MDD, OCD, or MDD with anxious depression typically experience decreased activity in areas of their brain that regulate mood, emotion, and behavior. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy is designed to increase brain activity by stimulating those areas with electromagnetic waves, similar to the way an MRI functions.
Those waves are directed via a handheld treatment device containing a metal coil that generates rapidly alternating magnetic fields. Repetitive magnetic pulses excite the underactive neurons, stimulating their activity in a way that is both safe and controlled. With regular treatment sessions, TMS trains your brain to improve its activity; over time, it learns how to function better on its own.
NeuroStar uses a patented technology called Contact Sensing to ensure the exact dosage for each electromagnetic pulse. Over time and with regular treatments, most patients in Plymouth Meeting who choose NeuroStar Advanced TMS experience reduced symptomatic effects of their mental health conditions.
Each TMS session lasts for 20 to 30 minutes. Treatments are typically administered daily or several times per week over the course of seven weeks. During your session, the NeuroStar treatment device is held to very specific places on your scalp.
TMS is safe and is generally well-tolerated by most patients. Sessions are quick; they do not require anesthesia and a patient should be able to resume any normal activities afterward. While some people experience temporary side effects, such as headaches, scalp discomfort, or muscle twitching during or after treatment, they are mild and will disappear within days.
Results from TMS sessions are not immediate. Most people adopt a six-to-seven-week program with sessions five days a week. Over time, you should start to notice improvements in the condition that prompted TMS therapy. Most patients experience optimal results after the recommended six-week treatment course.
The positive effects of TMS therapy can last up to 12 months. If you feel the effects are wearing off, you can schedule a maintenance TMS appointment—there is no lifetime limit to the number of times you can receive TMS treatments.
